The Malta Sports Science Revolution (MSSR) started with a simple question:
Why aren’t we using science to guide sport in Malta?

Too often, we see young athletes burned out, coaches working without support, and decisions made based on opinion rather than evidence. MSSR was created to change that — not through noise, but through knowledge.

MSSR is a growing platform dedicated to:
-
Sharing evidence-based information in a clear, practical way
-
Bridging the gap between research and coaching
-
Supporting coaches, athletes, and parents
-
Proposing real policy change rooted in science
-
Creating educational tools, ebooks, and courses designed for the Maltese context

We’re not backed by any institution or organisation. This is an independent initiative — built by an educator and a coach.
MSSR is here to prove that even in a small country, we can lead through education, science, and transparency.
This isn’t just a website.
It’s a movement.
It’s a revolution.

Hi, I’m Darren — and this is the story behind why I started the Malta Sports Science Revolution.

I’ve been a Physical Education teacher for over 10 years, working across both primary and secondary schools. For the past five years, I’ve been teaching at the National Sports School — working directly with Malta’s next generation of athletes.

But if I’m honest, I was never a “natural athlete.”
In fact, I barely did any sport in my early years. My parents enrolled me in football as a child in the hopes of keeping me active, but I didn’t show much promise and quickly became invisible. By the age of 8, I’d dropped out completely. With PE being almost non-existent in my primary years, I spent much of my youth on the sidelines — physically inactive, lacking confidence, and always feeling behind.

Then something changed.

At 14, I happened to watch a karate competition — and fell in love. That moment sparked something in me, and for the first time, I started making a real effort. I grew stronger, faster, and finally felt like I belonged. Martial arts became my foundation, and to this day I hold a 1st Dan in Shotokan Karate and a 2nd Dan in Tang Soo Do.

That late start gave me something many coaches forget: empathy. I know what it’s like to be left behind. And I never want another child to feel that way.

This passion led me to pursue coaching studies at MCAST, where I was fortunate to learn under incredible lecturers — especially the late John Walsh, whose encouragement shaped my entire career.

Since then, my journey has taken me through:
-
A BSc in Sports Science (Manchester Metropolitan University)
-
A Master’s in Strength and Conditioning (St. Mary's University, London)
-
A Master’s in Physical Education (IFE)
-
And currently, a Doctorate in Strength and Conditioning (St. Mary's University)

Throughout this path, I’ve remained a teacher at heart. I love learning — but even more, I love sharing what I learn. That’s why I started this page.

I created MSSR as a way to make sports science practical, understandable, and accessible — especially for coaches, athletes, and parents in Malta. If even one person applies something they read here to help a child thrive, then I’ve done my job.

Outside of MSSR, I also run:
-
Fitness Challenge – promoting fitness for adults
-
AES Gymnastics – an educational gymnastics programme for children

I train daily for the joy of it — whether it’s running, martial arts, Hyrox, OCR, swimming, or strength work. I'm grateful to every client, student, and colleague who’s helped shape me into the coach and teacher I am today.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
The revolution has only just begun.
Darren Bezzina
